Frequently Asked Questions

An identification number is a unique code assigned to your property, such as a serial number, VIN, IMEI, or product code. These numbers are crucial for identifying and recovering lost or stolen property. They provide irrefutable proof of ownership and allow law enforcement to verify items in their possession. Always record and register these numbers immediately after purchasing valuable items.
Serial numbers are typically found on a label or engraved on the device itself. For electronics, check the back, bottom, or inside battery compartments. For vehicles, the VIN is usually on the dashboard near the windshield or on the driver's side door frame. Mobile devices display IMEI numbers in settings or by dialing *#06#. Always photograph these numbers for your records.
Basic registration and searching are free for individual users. We offer premium features for businesses and organizations that need bulk registration, API access, or advanced reporting capabilities. Law enforcement agencies have free access to all features necessary for investigations and property recovery.
First, file a police report immediately and obtain the report number. Then, update your GoneFinder listing to mark the item as stolen, including the police report number. This alerts law enforcement nationwide and increases the chances of recovery. Continue to check for updates and respond promptly to any law enforcement inquiries.
Active registrations remain indefinitely as long as your account is active. Stolen property reports are maintained for a minimum of 7 years, even if the account becomes inactive. Law enforcement may request extended retention for ongoing investigations. You can request deletion of your data at any time, subject to legal requirements.
You should only register property you currently own or have legal authority over. Pre-registration is not permitted. However, you can search our database before purchasing used items to ensure they haven't been reported as stolen. This protects you from unknowingly purchasing stolen goods.
If you find property you suspect might be stolen, do not attempt to return it yourself. Contact local law enforcement and provide them with any identification numbers. They can search our database and handle the proper return process. Never confront someone you believe may be in possession of stolen property.
We employ enterprise-grade security including 256-bit encryption, secure data centers, and regular security audits. Personal information is never publicly displayed. Only verified law enforcement agencies can access owner contact information during official investigations. See our Security Policy for full details.
